Science, Social Studies, and Stories

Thematic units of study provide the foundation for learning through engaging read-alouds and meaningful exploration. Rooted in early childhood best practices, our youngest students learn through hands-on experiences, center based activities, and a project based approach that brings each unit to life. These themes are also woven into our Encore classes, creating meaningful cross curricular connections that deepen understanding and enrich each child’s learning experience.

Lower School

Science, Social Studies, and Stories

In Lower School, the domains of science and social studies are deeply rooted in rich literacy experiences while also expanding these topics and concepts into Encore classes. Through real-world applications, hands-on learning experiences and engaging and dynamic cross-curricular projects, students are able to delve deeper into each topic and relate these concepts to their life. These units of study shape our students' subject knowledge and content vocabulary in the areas of geography, American history, world history and discovery through the Next Generation Science Standards.

SK:

Upper School

Science and Social Studies

In Upper School, students engage in a broad scope of Social Studies content, examining history, geography, economics, civics, and society through the lens of each time period. Science learning is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and takes place in both the core classroom setting and Encore classes.

3rd Grade:

Social Studies: Maps and Globes, World Geography, Tennessee Geography, Economics, Indigenous People, and Early North American Settlements 

Science: Forces Around Us, Life Cycles and Traits, Different Environments, Observing Weather

4th Grad:

Social Studies: American Revolution, Constitution, Building the New Nation, The Growth of the Republic, the United States Prior to the Civil War, and Reconstruction

Science: Forces and Energy, Using Energy, Our Dynamic Earth, and Information Processing and Living Things

5th Grade:

Social Studies: Gilded Age and Progressive Era, World War I and the Roaring Twenties, World War II, Civil Rights Movement, Tennessee Prior to Statehood, Statehood and Early Tennessee History, TN in the Civil War Era, and Tennessee in the 20th Century

Science: Investigate Matter, Ecosystems, Earth’s Interactive Systems, and Earth and Space Patterns

6th Grade:

Social Studies: Foundations of Human Civilization, Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Israel, Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Greece and, Ancient Rome

Science: Life Structure and Function, Body Systems, Energy in the Atmosphere, Human Impact on the Environment, and Interdependence
